SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS Design Technology

The Design Technology Department have been whipping up some fantastic projects this term – most recently, Year 8 have made their very own set of coat hooks – complete with wooden mount and coated metal hooks.

DT is a wonderful subject for learning new practical skills and this project is no exception. The students first used equipment to turn a straight piece of steel into a twisted length, added a hook section to the bottom and then tried their hand at drilling holes in the metal to accommodate screws later.

Each of the hooks were then placed into a heated cabinet and warmed to 360 degrees before being plunged into a container of dry plastic dip coating particles. These then melt onto the hot metal to form a protective and decorative coating.

Power tools were then use to create decorative shaping to the edges and to rout out space on the back of the wooden mount for the hooks to be attached, creating a flush finish to the back.

The students have thoroughly enjoyed this project and will be using the laser cutter next to engrave text on the front of their wooden mount.

Keep your eyes peeled on our social media channels for the finished products!
