Following on from our highly successful Art Scholars’ Textiles Workshop last week, the Expressive Arts Faculty hosted a Flamenco Guitar Workshop for our Music Scholars and guitarists on Thursday. In the Performance Hall, our talented musicians gathered around, eager to learn a new style of guitar playing from local guitarist, Mr Daniel Lewis.

We were particularly excited to welcome Daniel, as he was himself a pupil at St Edward’s from Kindergarten, leaving us at the end of Sixth Form in 2013. Since graduating, he has been in many different bands, including Glass Kingdom (Heavy Metal), The Sieged (Classic Rock), The Miscreants (Reggae/Ska), as well as doing session work for musicals such as School of Rock, and for Country singers such as Demi Marriner. He studied Flamenco guitar at Taller Flamenco in Seville.

Students had a fantastic time, learning from Daniel’s expertise and understanding the subtle differences between flamenco and classical style of guitar playing. With delicate fingers, they learnt the complex finger techniques and touched on the number of styles and rhythmic structures there are to learn. Despite the challenge, students were delighted to learn and enjoyed hearing the culturally rich music that comes from this style of playing.
