This week, Year 7 students participated in a thoroughly magical Chemistry lesson with Ms Fowler-Roberts, where they were tasked with making rainbows using water, sodium carbonate, universal indicator and ethanoic acid.

The experiment required a steady hand as students carefully, and gradually, added ethanoic acid drop by drop into their mixture. Sure enough, after shaking the chemicals together and with precise measuring, the students found that their once transparent liquid turned every shade of the rainbow!

The experiment was a huge success and was an interesting way to show how chemicals can combine to produce different colours and effects; as well as teach students how universal indicator works with different colours indicating different pH levels.
