Year 8 have been learning about digestion in their recent Science lessons.

They have been considering the physical mechanisms involved with processing food in the body, as well as the chemical processes involved.

To demonstrate the effects of stomach acid on ingested bones, Dr Aspey showed the students chicken bones which had been left to soak in either water or a weak acid solution. He explained that the bones left in the acid had become soft and pliable as the calcium that gives them their strength had been broken down. By contrast, the bones soaked in water remained firm.

A small demonstration with a big impact, it’s safe to say the students won’t forget this lesson in a hurry!
